Staff View
The Staff View (also known as the MARC View) displays the complete bibliographic record in a series of numbered fields. This is the format that allows bibliographic records to be shared among many libraries regardless of which catalog they use. The number in the field (called the tag) tells the computer what type of information is contained in that field. A list of some of the common tags used follows:
| 001 | Voyager control number |
| 020 | International Standard book number |
| 100 | Author [last name, first name] |
| 245 | Title, subtitle, and statement of responsibility |
| 246 | Variant or other titles |
| 250 | Edition |
| 260 | Publication information |
| 300 | Physical description of item (i.e. pagination, number of units, etc.) |
| 440/490 | Series |
| 500 | Note (OK to have as many 500 notes as seem appropriate) |
| 504 | Includes bibliographical references |
| 520 | Summary of content |
| 505 | Contents note (used for multiple titles contained in one item or to list titles of individual parts of the item) |
| 590 | Local note |
| 600 | Subject heading for personal name |
| 610 | Subject heading for corporate name |
| 650 | Subject heading for topic |
| 651 | Subject heading for geographic area |
| 700 | Additional author, editor, etc. |
| 710 | Corporate author, editor, etc. |
| 800 | Series associated with a specific author |
| 830 | Standard name for series when it differs from what is on the title |
The tagging and entering of information into these
tags is done according to an international standard. Because of this,
bibliographic records can be "read" by computers and the information put into
the appropriate indexes (MARC = Machine Readable Cataloging).
