Advanced Search

Advanced Search allows you to combine up to three sets of search terms.
It also allows you to specify which field to search. Each of the three sets of search boxes can be set to a different type of search so you could use one set of search boxes to search author, another to search title and a third to search date of publication.
  1. Type your search word(s) in the Search for:box.
  2. Use the drop down menu in the Search By: box to specify which field(s) to search.
  3. The default is to combine each set of search words in the Search For: boxes using AND.  Your other options are OR, NOT.
  4. You can use LIMITS to narrow your search.
Click the Search button to begin your search. Click the Resetbutton to clear the search page.

Search Tips:
Keyword   This keyword search is a relevance search that defaults to 'AND' between terms.
For example: dogs cats will retrieve all items containing both dogs and cats somewhere in the record.
To truncate, use a question mark. For example: child? will retrieve child, child's, children, childhood, etc.

Title   Omit initial articles (a, an, the, el, la, etc.) when doing a title search:
lewis and clark journals   NOT   the lewis and clark journals

Subject Keyword Anywhere   Searches by Library of Congress Subject headings. This search may match individual words in more than one heading.
The Library of Congress Subject Heading books (the red book) located in the Reference Collection may help you determine the correct heading.
If the search does not retrieve the results you expected, try a Keyword search.

Author   For individuals, enter last name and first name, if known:
william
shakespeare
For organizations or groups, enter the name:
american psychological association
It is ok to enter just a couple of words in the name and the search will automatically search those terms.

KW Subject, Title, Author    This keyword search defaults to 'AND' between terms and searches only the subject, title and author fields.
Limits   Use Limits to apply one or more limits (such as years, languages, locations, etc.) to your searches. Remember, limits are retained between searches until removed.
  • Location - sets limits to where the item is held
  • Medium - choose the type of format such as computer file, videorecording or posters, photographs, pictures
  • Item type - choose the type of item such as musical sound recording, map, or kit
  • Date - choose a range of years, before or after certain dates, or a specific date
  • Language - choose from over 100 languages the item could be published in
  • Place of publication - choose from over 200 countries worldwide and all US states

Limits and Quick Limits cannot be used simultaneously.
